Sound-offset encoding is related to speech-in-noise perception at sentence level in older adults20/12/2025
Sound-offset responses can be robustly identified at the single-subject level using EEG. Sound-offset responses were larger in the active task than in passive listening, suggesting task dependency and indicating that attention may be involved in sound-offset encoding. Active sound-offset responses correlate with sentence-level speech-in-noise performance. This work we highlighted the importance of central auditory processing in speech-in-noise perception in addition to age and pure-tone audiogram, including sound segregation, auditory memory, and temporal processing. Dr Meher Lad has just won the Newcastle University Medical Sciences Doctoral Thesis Prize for the wonderful thesis he's recently submitted for his PhD on hearing, memory, and MCI. New EEG paper on neural responses during speech-in-noise and figure-ground perception. In this new work published in Hearing Research, we show robust event-related potentials during figure-ground segregation even during passive listening. This was in contrast to speech-in-noise perception, which showed weak neural responses only during active listening. This straightforward analysis can be performed with a single recording electrode on the vertex of the scalp.
